My Cabbages & Roses Journey - Louise

On the 5^th February just gone it was my one-year anniversary working at the Cabbages & Roses Avery Row store in Mayfair. I started working at Cabbages when I was 17, whilst in the middle of sitting my AS levels. I was a complete Cabbages fanatic, and was determined to get a job there – despite living in Oxford. As you can imagine, my mum wasn’t happy – she said it was too far away and that I needed to concentrate on my studies. This didn’t stop me, however, and through numerous email conversations with Kate Strutt (Christina’s daughter) I landed a job interview. I had also done a week’s work experience at the Northcote Road store, and this was very helpful in getting to know the business and become more experienced dealing with customers. I soon found myself having an interview for a part-time position that was going at Avery Row, and from the moment I entered the hidden gem tucked behind the chaos of Oxford Street I knew it was perfect for me. Luckily I seemed to fit the criteria for the part-time position, and started working the following weekend.

Becoming part of the Cabbages & Roses team was by far one of the best things I have ever done. I felt extremely proud to be working for my favourite company, in London’s Mayfair – especially at the same time as doing my studies back in Oxford. Working at Cabbages has been a huge learning curve and it certainly made me reconsider the direction my life was taking. At the time I was studying subjects such as business, economics and government and politics. Cabbages made me realise how much I missed being a creative, as I was an extremely artistic person before studying the more academic subjects stated above. I couldn’t compare Cabbages to school, and I wasn’t happy studying subjects that I no longer felt passionate about. As a result I decided to take a big risk – dropping out of school and instead of completing my A Levels applying for Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts to do a Foundation Year. This was actually my mum’s idea. My grades had been slipping and I think she could tell I wasn’t happy. Getting the job at Cabbages made me realise that anything is possible – and going to Central Saint Martins would truly be just what I needed.

Not only has my job given me an insight into the fashion business, but it has also come into good use when applying to art schools such as Central Saint Martins. I was extremely lucky to be offered a place there soon after applying and having an interview. This resulted in me moving from Oxford to halls of residence in Hackney and having to completely self sufficient – leaving behind my family and home of 17 years. Despite all this change in one year, the one thing that has remained solid has been my job at Cabbages – and being a poor student you can imagine how grateful I am to have it. Living in Hackney I am now able to bike to work instead of commuting from Oxford, and I think that my skills acquired at Central Saint Martins has also come into use on occasions at Cabbages. It certainly makes good conversation with the customers – several of whom have children also studying art and fashion in London. I have also met a few other art students who have come into the shop, most of whom adore the clothing but being a student cannot sadly afford it!

Overall, my year at Cabbages has been full of changes and excitements. My life has taken a different direction and I am extremely lucky to be where I am now. Currently, I am applying for BA undergraduate courses in London and Falmouth – my two favourite places. At this time in my life nothing seems to stay the same and I think this is what makes life so exciting. On the other hand it is nice to know Cabbages will always be there, with its beautiful clothing, kind customers, and lovely staff team.

Spring is Coming

This week we were visited by a lovely Japanese magazine. They spent the day in Bath at Christina's house taking photographs. Christina was asked to style her house as though it were Spring, as the magazine will be on the shelves in April.

Spring bulbs were crucial: hydrangeas, narcissi, moss and lichen covered twigs. A lovely day was had by all!

Trip Across London

Today we went all the way from South West London (where our Head Office is based) to South East London. It doesn't sound like it's far, but in terms of architecture, it is worlds apart. We had an appointment in Bermondsey with a photographer who was taking photos of our new fabric collection, the Avery Range.

East London has fantastic architecture, so often new and old are juxtaposed against each other. Steel and glass right next to red industrial brick. This makes the East London sky line incredibly interesting and, we thought, pretty beautiful with such a blue sky for a back drop.

We just about had time to have a quick cup of tea at Le Pain Quotidien and then it was back across London to the office.

Can't wait to show you all the cutouts for the Avery Range!

2012 Fabric Price List

The time has come for us to increase the price of our beautiful fabrics.

Although the price has remained unchanged for the past four years, the increases in cost of raw materials as well as transportation costs has left us with no alternative. However, the good news is that our printing methods have also changed and we now solely use water based colours which, as well as being more ecologically sound, are approved by Oeko Tex. All our fabrics are still hand printed in the UK.

We shall be launching a new collection in March 2012, meanwhile take this opportunity to make your orders before the price increase on the 1st of April 2012. Click here to shop.

Brixton Village

Three years ago Lambeth council decided to revamp a tired old shopping arcade, the result is Brixton Village. It is a bustling undercover market, full of eateries and independent local shops - a treasure trove of individuality.

I spent my Saturday morning browsing the shops and eating delicious food. We wanted to go to the fabulous Franco Manca, who make sourdough pizzas, but unfortunately, so did half of London and there was a huge queue. We ended up snuggled with blankets outside Breads Etcetera, each table has a Dualit toaster and a selection of amazing handmade bread...the rest is up to you!

If you haven't ventured to Brixton yet, I'd highly recommend it.

Winter Walk

Having for a while felt cheated of a proper winter, with bracing and cleansing frosts, or that heavenly silence that comes with thick blankets of snow- I was thrilled last week to a) have the time and b) the perfect weather for a jolly good brisk walk.

This is what I saw - just unspoiled, unassuming , ungroomed countryside - this is happiness with bells on.

What Holly's Wearing...The Fluted Bottom Dress

Dancing on Ice...well trying to!

Last week we took a trip to the Natural History Museum's ice rink to remind ourselves that there are some brilliant aspects of it being cold.

The building itself is incredibly beautiful, it is highly decorative and very imposing. It is one of London's many museums and has no admission fee, so well worth a visit.

From November to January they build an ice rink in the grounds of the museum and it is always packed with people enjoying the chance to try out skating.

Don't worry if your skills are a bit rusty, they have these rather sweet penguins to help keep you upright!

Unfortunately, the rink was taken down this week, but click here to find out information for next year's rink. There is also one at Somerset House which is open until the 22nd January and one in the grounds of the Tower of London.

What Holly's Wearing...the Knitted Top Dress

Today Holly and I went for a walk by Kew Riverside in our lunch break. I thought she looked so cosy in the Knitted Top Bubble Dress in black I decided to take a couple of photos of her.

She has worn the dress with gold jewellery and a vintage scarf. She has chosen to wear classic brown Oxfords, but it would also be great with biker or riding boots.

A visit to Lincoln Cathedral

Having had the most wonderful, restful Christmas, I thankfully began January with a positive and optimistic outlook! One of the reasons being that I have some really lovely plans in place; a tried and tested way to beat the January blues. Nothing particularly exotic or extravagant, just bits and piece to lift the spirit whilst the weather remains grim and the next bank holiday feels a long way off (6th April is the next one...!) A decision was made to visit Lincoln on Saturday, stay overnight and then drive across to Melbourne in Derbysire on Sunday, for lunch at the Mileburne Restaurant. Having never been to Lincoln before, I was excited about visiting the cathedral and luckily our (highly recommended) guest house, the Bailhouse Hotel, was a two minute walk away. We walked into the cathedral at around 4.30 in the afternoon as dusk descended, and were immediately greeted by the beautiful sound of St Hugh's choir practising in the stalls. The low light and abundance of candles created the most effective atmosphere, and we spent the next 45 minutes quietly walking around and taking it all in. The building contains all sorts of interesting pieces of sculpture, history and architecture; whether one is religious or not it is the most stunning place to visit. I took some photo's to share with you.

The Trembling Lady

Not a real lady! The trembling lady has always been the nickname for one of London's most beautiful bridges, Albert Bridge, since it was built in 1873. This name came from the fact that it has always had a tendency to shake. The bridge was closed for maintenance and strengthening 22 long months ago and was finally re-opened at the beginning of last month. The local council have said ""The amount of work has been truly monumental with over 10,000bolts, 40,000 litres of paint and 1,000 tonnes of grit used duringthe restoration." Holly and I popped along to see for ourselves...

Albert Bridge was originally built as a toll bridge and these are the only remaining bridge toll booths in London.

There are still the signs on the toll booths that were to remind soldiers from nearby Chelsea barracks that they could not all cross the bridge at once because the old bridge would have started to shake.

The bridge has been completely repainted and its colours of pink, blue and green look beautifully fresh, however, I think that it has to be said that this bridge is at its most stunning at night, when over 4000 bulbs light it up.

A FRENCH CHRISTMAS

I woke up this morning to the most beautiful sunny day through my bedroom window. So I thought I would share with you all a few photos of my French Christmas spent with my family.

The weather was so nice we even went for a drive in our 1940s car, a 4 seater Morgan.

We have a lovely Christmas tree (well I think so anyway!), it is very simple with relatively little on it, but with just enough sparkle and of course room for lots of presents under it!

A lot of our decorations were bought when I was little so have great sentimental value.

Nothing better than snuggling up on the sofa with a fire roaring behind you.

A Stylish Customer...

As the manager of the Langton Street store, I often meet beautifully dressed people that interpret C&R in their own individual way. This is the lovely Stephanie who came into Langton Street on Saturday with her mum Maria, to do their last bit of Christmas shopping before returning home to Dublin. As she looked so sweet in this outfit, and had such a Cabbages spirit about her, I felt it was only fair that I should share just how wonderful she looked. She is wearing the Plain Victoria Shirt, and the Raspberry Frill skirt in Green. Both of these items go so well together, and were perfectly matched with her tan shoes.

The Dining Room Shop

Another independent store that we love is The Dining Room Shop, again in Barnes, which was set up by Kate Dyson in 1985. One of the original team who set up 'The World of Interiors' publication, Kate decided to open the store to be nearer to home and her four young children. Now in its 26th year, the shop is regularly featured in the press and is a fantastic destination for a shopping trip (or simply a visit to peruse their beautiful objects!)

Yesterday we blogged about the lovely Tobias and the Angel - today we have more delicious things for you! At the back of the store, in another beautiful room, is Knots Elementals, a Kinesiology and essential oil company normally based in Middlesex. For a limited time the store has decamped to Barnes and it's an absolute feast for the eyes, let alone the spirit! A lovely lady sits and advises on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and she even mixed an ointment for Christina's grandson Frankie, with a sweet little personalised ticket.

Tobias and the Angel

As a small business ourselves, we always try to support other independent retailers where possible, particularly when they have stores as beautiful as this one.

In the spirit of Christmas we went along to Tobias and the Angel, a double-fronted treasure trove filled with handmade and antique homewares. The shop is situated in leafy Barnes (south-west London) and we had remembered how wonderful it looks especially during the festive period.

The store was opened by Angel Hughes in 1986 on White Hart Lane SW13. It is open everyday (except Sunday) from 10am to 6pm and is well worth a trip. For more information, visit their website www.tobiasandtheangel.com.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

This weekend I decided it was high time I got into the spirit of Christmas. Here’s a quick run-down of how I did it…

Saturday morning I got up early and got the bus down to the Kings Road (Chelsea, London). It is always bustling with people going about their Saturday morning tasks and I can happily sit in a coffee shop just watching the people go by. I was en route to Jigsaw in Duke of York Square (where Cabbages and Roses has a concession), when suddenly I found myself in the midst of hundreds of people dressed as Father Christmas, it was one of the most surreal things I’ve ever seen, but certainly got me feeling Christmassy!!

Later on I caught up with them as they marched towards Sloane Square tube station, as they chanted “What do we want? CHRISTMAS! When do we want it? NOW!”

Sunday morning I had been invited to attend the Royal Guard’s carol service by my friend Alicia. It is held at the Guard’s Chapel in Wellington Barracks – for those of you that don’t know, this is where all the soldiers with the bear skin hats train and live.

The chapel is beautiful and steeped in so much history. The ceilings are lined with beautiful flags from previous battles and the walls covered in memorials for those soldiers that have lost their lives.

The service was beautiful and there’s nothing more rousing than singing O Come All Ye Faithful against the background of a full band.

I finished off my weekend by inviting some friends round for a roast and some mulled wine. I can’t think of many better ways to spend a Sunday than with great friends, eating, drinking and laughing.

Weekend over; I’m now thoroughly ready for Christmas.

Christmas Tree (oh Christmas Tree)

Today I finally went to pick my Christmas tree up, and stopped off along the way at a local fete where I enjoyed a delicious cupcake (white chocolate and raspberry) and nosed around the stalls (hand knitted scarves, vintage jewellery and handmade cards). I took some photo's of nice things along the way & thought I'd share them with you. My tree has now been decorated and I'm feeling very celebratory! Have fun decorating your trees everyone!

How to stay cosy...

Velvet (a very short history)

With Christmas only 16 days away, the season of celebration has begun! Typically associated with Christmas, velvet is soft and luxurious to the touch, traditionally made from silk or a silk blend. Not knowing too much about its history, we decided to do a little research...

The art of velvet-weaving apparently originated in medieval Kashmir around the beginning of the fourteenth century. For a long period of history, velvet was a possession of the rich and royal; a sumptuous fabric that was draped across walls and adorned noble dress, as without the use of industrial power looms it was extremely costly to produce. Velvet is woven on a special loom that weaves two thicknesses of velvet at the same time, and the two pieces are then cut apart to create the pile effect, giving a textured fabric surface and change in colour tone. Cutting the pile into shapes can create cut velvet surface patterns that are popular in drapery and soft furnishings, and twisting the fabric whilst wet forms crushed velvet, a highly textured velvet fabric. The end product is extremely plush and soft, and most popular in deep, rich colours.

We have combined our love of luxury with our knitwear to produce the Velvet Bow Bottom Sweater (also available in navy) picutred below, for this season.

The long sleeves and round neck will keep you warm and cosy, whilst the sweet bow and velvet trim on the hem add a touch of wearable luxury, perfect for the holidays. We also have the Velvet Flossie Frock Coat, a truly decadent coat silk mix coat, cut beautifully to nip in the waist and flare gently over the hips. It also features decorative ticket pockets on the front and a vent opening at the back for ease of movement. An ideal coat to wear over party dresses this Christmas!

The Check Linda Pleat Dress

Our featured item today is the Check Linda Pleat Dress; a practical pinafore dress in large black and off-white checks, fitted across the bust and gently flaring over the hips. We sourced the bold check fabric from a mill in America, which according to their history is 'the oldest in America' (www.woolrichfabrics.com), and the dress was made here in the UK.

As seen here on Holly, the dress is sleeveless and works best layered over soft jersey tops such as the Reindeer Tee or the Fluted Jersey Top, or alternatively over a cosy shirt such as the Plain Victoria Shir t with its decorative collar and cuffs.

Christmas at Brook Cottage

Christmas arrived at our three Cabbages & Roses stores last week, and Christina has been hanging natural greenery and decorating the tree in her own Bath home, as seen in the The Sunday Telegraph this weekend! The tree is simply adorned with white lights and cinnamon sticks tied together in sweet bunches, and fresh greenery from the garden and bountiful displays of fruit cover available surfaces, with the sound of a crackling fire in the background. What better way to spend the weekend...

Holiday Stockings

Christmas is just around the corner and now is the perfect time to start making preparations. Homemade stockings hanging over the fireplace evoke memories of childhood Christmas mornings, waiting in anticipation to dig deep into your stocking to fish for oranges, gold coins and nuts amongst the presents.

We believe you are never too old for a stocking and the ritual of hanging a stocking by the fire adds to the holiday excitement. Homemade stockings come in all shapes and sizes, and our guide below gives you direction on how to make a similar one to the photo above. Recycling antique quilts that are beyond repair make for a wonderfully soft and textured stocking, and patchworking them with plain linens or delicately printed florals looks equally delightful. Hand embroidery is more time consuming but gives a unique and personalised finish, even if it is just the recipient's initials on the toe or top hem.

To make the stocking:

1. Draw a stocking shape onto pattern paper or parchment paper, and cut out a pair of stockings from the antique quilt, as well as a hanging strap (7 x 53cm)
2. Stitch the two stocking pieces together - having completed any embellishment to them already - leaving the top straight edges open
3. Fold over the top edge by 6cm to the wrong side and stitch in place
4. To make the hanging strap, fold it in half and stitch the raw ends firmly to the inside of the top hem
5. Hang your stocking by the fire and wait for Christmas eve...

Holidays are coming...

With the beginning of December starting this Thursday, Christmas is very nearly upon us! Having adorned the front of our stores with festive greenery last week, it is now time for us to turn our attentions to the decorations in store. Christina has been busy making room in our stores for the real Christmas trees that are arriving this week, as well hanging pretty lights and a creating a very 'Cabbages & Roses' festive atmosphere. We will be showing you pictures of our stores later this week on the blog, so do remember to come and have a look.

Columbia Road Flower Market - a Sunday afternoon treat...

This afternoon, with my beautiful friend Katie, I took a trip to one of the finest flower markets in London, which takes place every Sunday along Columbia Road, E2. The market is always extremely busy, with east London stall holders shouting out their deals above the buzzing, chattering public spilling from boutique shops, old pubs and bijoux cafes. Beginning and ending on Hackney Road, the market curves along a cobbled street lined with Victorian terraces and mansion blocks. Popular with locals, but relatively unknown to tourists, it's an east London institution. It's also great value for money; we each had a Cumberland sausage bap with rocket, caremalised onion chutney and mustard for £3, a delicious latte from the renowned Italian lunch spot, Campania for £2.30, and I picked up 3 bunches of flowers for a fiver!

A Cabbages devotee, Katie turned up in the Lettie Sweater and the Plain New Hacking Jacket, so I couldn't resist taking some photo's of her to show you how gorgeous she looks in our collection. I wore the Inverted Pleat Front Dress but without the collar and cuffs for a slightly different look, and teamed it with opaque tights and my (newly reheeled!) Russell & Bromley Oxfords. Here is a collection of shots from our day...

At the end of a crisp and sunny November afternoon, I cycled off with my flowers precariously balanced in my backpack and left Katie to go shopping for the winter casserole she's making for supper (not for me unfortunately, but you can't have it all!)

The Jolly Reindeer Sweater...

Christmas is just around the corner and our Jolly Reindeer Sweaters are in store ready! We have used a wonderfully soft blend of alpaca which make our pieces extremely warm and cosy, and each sweater takes approximately 3 weeks to knit by Wendy Keith Designs and her team. Wendy has a large and very talented team of expert, four-needle, hand knitters, crochet and embroidery artists who have worked together with us to produce our festive knitwear, including our Bobble Hats and Snowflake Fingerless Gloves in red, navy and charcoal.

Each piece of our festive knitwear is individual and a one off as each knitter interpret our designs in their own way, making this a very unique sweater. We feel it is very important to support the creative community in Britain and contrast the mass market, throw away culture that has become a major part of fashion.

The Raglan Sleeve (a very short history)

Following on from our post about the Cardigan, we thought we’d have a look into another style featured in our collection this season, and decided upon the Raglan Sleeve (as featured on our beautiful Eco Coat).

Interestingly, this comfortable and flattering style was actually born out of practical necessity. In 1815, during the Waterloo Campaign, Lord Raglan (born Badminton, Gloucestershire) received wounds to his right arm and sadly had to undergo amputation as a result. Following his operation, sweet Lord Raglan told the orderly not to take his arm away until he had removed a ring that his wife, Lady Emily Harriet Wellesley-Pole, had given him. Raglan had been an honourable and brave fellow, being awarded the Army Gold Cross and the Military General Service Medal for his services in the Peninsular War prior to this critical injury. After the loss of his right arm, Lord Raglan learnt to write with his left hand, and resumed his post as secretary to the British Embassy in Paris. He also sat in the House of Commons on behalf of Truro in Cornwall, was later appointed secretary to the Duke of Wellington, and remained with him as his Military Secretary until the Duke’s death in 1852.

Obviously not a gentleman to shy away from his duties despite falling victim to a critical injury, Lord Raglan’s tailor innovatively began to make garments with a sleeve that made dressing much easier for him. The sleeve extends to become part of the shoulder, creating a diagonal seam from the underarm to the collar. This allowed much easier movement for Lord Raglan, who would have been adjusting to his disability whilst honourably trying to maintain his duties to his country.

Raglan died at the age of 66, in 1855 in Crimea, Ukraine. Present at the Crimean War, the anxieties of military action began to seriously affect his health. Following the failure of his last orchestrated attack on the 18^th June, he passed away 11 days later. He was succeeded by his wife and his two sons Arthur and Richard.

It was following his death that the Raglan Sleeve began to gain popularity for its useful advantages in country- and sports-wear, first appearing in the dictionary 9 years later, in 1864. The flexibility of the design means that it is beneficial in activities such as shooting and hunting – you will also be familiar with the style being used on classic American Baseball sweaters.

Our Eco Coat is one of our favourites this season – epitomising classic British outerwear with added elegance. The wool & mohair blend makes for a warm and hardy piece which is fully lined and extends to mid-calf length, giving almost complete coverage for cold, brisk winter days (whilst still allowing space for your feet to stride quickly towards a warm fire and a toasty glass of mulled cider!) We think it’s a key style this winter and as an addition to the green tartan, we have made an exclusive selection of plain navy, plain stone and black & brown check versions available only in our standalone stores.

National Tree Week...

Every year during the approach to Christmas, Edward Strutt, Christina's oldest son, salvages branches from the evergreen trees that his job, as a tree surgeon and forester, requires him to cut down. Not being a family to waste anything and keen to re-cycle what would otherwise be disposed of, we use the cuttings to decorate our shops at Christmas time.

This being National Tree Week, an annual event run by The Tree Council (www.treecouncil.org.uk) we thought we would dedicate some blog posts this week to our national treescape, and encourage our readers to see how they can contribute to what is such an important aspect in slowing down global warming.

The tradition of decorating homes and shops with greenery from evergreen trees, has been in existence since the Romans ruled most of the world. A chequered history followed, involving pagans and other religious and political figures declaring the frivolity and decoration of houses inside and out as a serious and sometimes criminal act! However, Queen Victoria and her Prince, Albert, settled the debate and their enthusiasm for Christmas decoration survives heartily to this day.

British Business Awards, Tokyo

On the 4th November, on a sultry night in Tokyo, Kate and Christina Strutt, as guests of our lovely partners in Japan, Innocent, attended the British Business Awards at the Inter Continental Hotel.

Cabbages & Roses had been nominated in the category 'Design and Innovation'. Past winners of this prestigious award have been James Dyson, Richard Branson, Jo Malone, Paul Smith and other brilliant and innovative British business people.

Now, we are well aware at Cabbages & Roses, that we are a well loved brand; we are aware that we have a lovely loyal following, we sometimes also think that we are quite clever. However, blinded by the alumini that have gone before us, we had no inkling that we could ever be included in any category other than

"Best rather nice clothing and fabric brand, with the most helpful and kind sales staff, selling rather lovely although sometimes eccentric pieces from particularly beautiful shops''

You can imagine our surprise then, when our British Ambassador in Japan, His excellency David Warren, announced that the two finalists in the British Chamber of Commerce Award for Design and Innovation 2011 were... 'CABBAGES & ROSES and NISSAN MOTORS' (announced in that order!)

This rather amusing, surprising, and eccentric even, announcement caused roars of laughter amidst the Cabbages & Roses team. So much so, that we forgot to listen to the announcement of whom the winner was, which of course was Nissan Motors.

We congratulate Nissan Motors, but more important than a lovely award of finest marble, more important than the fact that Nissan are inventing cars that are so eco friendly that they are practically trees, we want to congratulate our partners Innocent, for their devotion to Cabbages & Roses, for their hard work and for making it possible for our tiny company to be mentioned in the same breath, on the same stage and in the same category of such very, very important people.

Christina, at the end of a very long bout of travelling, did not look her best, especially as she does not do 'black tie' very well. However, here is Kate Strutt's beautiful back wearing a Sam Bow Front dress, and our partners from Innocent - Nori Sakaue and Hisa Tsuchida, (who work with us alongside the lovely Yoko, not pictured).

All proceeds from the 2011 British Business Award Charity Auction went to business regeneration and capacity building activities in Tohoku, Japan.

The Cardigan (a very short history)

Here at Cabbages we’re not shy about how much we like to be cosy, warm and well insulated. With a wide range of gorgeous knitwear in our current collection, we started thinking about the word ‘cardigan’ and where it had come from. After a particularly confusing conversation with some lovely Afrikaans friends on a trip to South Africa last year, I discovered that cardigan isn’t a word every English speaking country is familiar with. As it turns out, it in fact has specifically British roots…

Originally a knitted waistcoat, the cardigan was popularised by James Brudenell, 7^th Earl of Cardigan from 1837 until his death in 1868. An immaculately dressed gentleman of questionable repute, once back on English soil he boasted about his endeavours in the battle of Balaclava (sounds unbelievable but is absolutely true!) exaggerating his bravery somewhat and as a result, receiving rather enthusiastic adulation. At the time, local merchants were eager to monopolise on his new found acclaim, and sold portraits of the Earl sporting the woollen garment. Becoming extremely fashionable as a result, it was later named in the Earl’s honour. Unfortunately for him however, his egotistical hyperbole gradually became apparent and his reputation as a soldier was increasingly tarnished (oblivious to this, he allegedly carried on as usual with a rather blinkered outlook!) He is, however, still historically notorious for his impeccable style, demanding in his later military leadership that his entire cavalry be meticulously dressed.

Without wanting to totally discredit the man responsible for one of our favourite winter warmers, he is also reputed to have been extremely generous and loyal to his men when they were in need – a brighter side to a chap that was otherwise a bit of a character. I wonder if he would approve of our selection of fine English apparel…

This morning Christina has been with our fabric printers in west London to oversee the production of our floral print Constance in multi. There is a real sense of excitement as our popular Cabbages & Roses fabric runs through the printers, and our finished fabric will be available to buy online and in store from the end of November.

Donate £1.50 to Maggie's Cancer Care Centres

To celebrate their 15th birthday, throughout the whole of November we are giving all of our customers the opportunity to donate £1.50 to Maggie's Cancer Care Centres when purchasing with C&R online.

A little background...

Maggie’s and Cabbages & Roses have been working together since Summer 2009, celebrating their passion for beautiful design and a thoughtful approach. Maggie’s provide support for people living with cancer out of welcoming, inspiring and, sometimes challenging, cancer support centres all over the UK.

The importance of environment has been a cornerstone of Maggie’s programme of support since the charity launched in 1995 – Maggie’s founder believed that providing the right kind of support in the right kind of space was an empowering way to help people live with, through and beyond cancer. Maggie’s have now built seven cancer support centres and are are raising funds to build a further eight, along with a ninth 'online centre'. The centres provide a drop-in service for anyone affected by cancer, including families, friends and carers; a programme of activities and groups helping people to manage stress, eat well and cope with grief and the impact of the side effects of cancer and a wealth of information and advice. It costs Maggie’s around £350,000 a year to provide this much-needed support out of one of their cancer support centres, and Maggie’s relies on the support of individuals and businesses like Cabbages & Roses, who generously donate their money, time and ideas - helping Maggie’s to help others, and to grow. It is Maggie’s aim to build a cancer support centre in the grounds of every major hospital in the UK and Cabbages & Roses have been helping make that happen by donating 10% of the profit made on some of their amazing clothes to Maggie’s over previous seasons.

How you can help...

This month we have decided to add an option to donate to Maggie's through our checkout process, for all of our customers who shop with us online. All you have to do is select the shipping option that includes the contribution, before you make your payment. You can view all of the delivery options in your shopping bag or, if you proceed straight to the check out, you can use the drop down menu to select either Standard, Western Eu or Rest of EU shipping 'with contribution to Maggie's' which will add the £1.50 donation onto your shipping cost.

Christina In Tokyo

Last week on Monday, Christina jumped on an aeroplane and flew to Tokyo to meet with our lovely partners, Innocent. The purpose of this exciting adventure was to open our little shop in a new Department Store called LUMINE in the heart of Tokyo's shopping district Ginza. Nothing could have prepared her for the extraordinary reception that a new shop could attract on a Wednesday afternoon in October...

Clearly, not all of these people were there just to see Cabbages & Roses, but two in particular made a special effort and travelled many miles to meet Christina.

Mrs Tomomi Yokoyama also travelled many miles to meet Christina and her Tokyo Roses!

The press were out in force and to her horror a microphone was thrust into Christina's hands. Unaccustomed as she is to public speaking, she bravely gave a little speech about the birth and life of Cabbages & Roses which, thankfully, was well received.

Keep posted for Christina's further adventures! Including an excursion to Hong Kong, and a book signing in CABBAGES & ROSES store in Daikanyama in Tokyo this week!

The Perfect Winter Wardrobe...

We have been pulling up our chunky socks at Cabbages & Roses, as the weather turns chillier and the cold starts to bite. Layering is the perfect solution to keeping warm, and there is nothing sweeter than a pinafore dress teamed with a shirt.

We have layered the new in Linda Pleat Dress in cheery red over the Plain Victoria Shirt, which has a beautiful ruffled collar and cuffs in soft cotton. The Flossie Frock Coat nips in at the waist, has an asymmetric vent as the back and creates a beautiful A line shape when buttoned.

Teamed with welly boots and tights, we think this makes the perfect winter outfit…

Winchester Styling Day

Yesterday Christina visited Jigsaw in Winchester to hold a personal styling event for C&R. I turned up with the ‘good’ camera and captured some images of the sessions taking place over what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable day. We presently have a corner of the beautiful store and it was a real pleasure to meet our loyal customers, as well as the team in Winchester who continue to champion our little brand.

The day began for Christina a couple of hours before I arrived and by the time I got there the store was already a flurry of activity. I was immediately presented with tea and cupcakes (yes, please!) and a warm welcome from the store manager, Sally, who looked incredible in her Cabbages outfit.

Christina attended to her personal appointments in between chatting to a stream of customers and we had some excellent feedback about the collection. Everyone was (fortunately) very happy to be snapped and I got some lovely photographs – you can find the whole album on our Facebook page. Victoria, Cindy and the other lovely ladies that joined us were all given a host of Cabbage tips by Christina. Dresses were belted, shirts and jackets were layered and skirts were pulled and tweaked and twisted. The store descended into minor chaos which was great fun and investment purchases were made not only for this coming winter, but the next, and the following, and then the one after that…

After lunch I took a wander down the high street and marvelled at the architecture in the city. It feels very English and very grand; I took a particular fancy to the Butter Cross pillar which is close to the store and has an interesting history. Erected in the 15^th century, it was saved from removal to a private location in 1770 by a small group of rioting townsfolk, outraged that their monument was being taken away. It has remained standing there ever since. The shops and cafes are all abundant with charm encased in their ancient housing, and with the market sprawled along the High Street we found a very buoyant, characterful town, and one in which we Cabbages felt very much at home. We’d like to thank the team at Winchester for looking after us so well, and we hope to be able to visit again soon.

Our lovely Langton Street manager, Lauren, is currently 8 months pregnant with her first baby. We're so excited about our new Cabbage, and can't wait to meet her (it's a girl!) so that we can dress her up in Bees bows. Lauren is leaving us today and we'd like to wish her the very best of luck and love, from all of us here at C&R. Don't worry - she promised us she'll be back very soon!
